Stephanie’s color drained. Her breathing turned shallow.

“Brent,” she whispered, panicked. “My chest. I… can’t breathe.”

Chaos erupted. Nurses sprang into action. Dr. Weaver leaned in, her voice calm but urgent.

“Where’s the pain?”

Stephanie pointed weakly. “Right side. It’s sharp… stabbing.”

I stood frozen, helpless.

Within the hour, a portable X-ray machine rolled into the room. Stephanie trembled as they positioned her. “Is this safe for the baby?”

“She’s here now,” Dr. Weaver said gently. “You’re the priority.”

The scan revealed a mass. A shadow none of us expected. Dr. Weaver’s tone shifted from comforting to clinical.

“We need more tests. But we have to consider the possibility of lung cancer.”

“Lung cancer?” Stephanie blinked, stunned. “But… I’ve never smoked.”
