A faint, high-pitched whimper, barely louder than the rain.

Lucas pressed his face closer to the window. Nothing. But the sound came again. Curious and worried, he pulled on his sneakers and slipped out the back door, ignoring the way his shirt stuck to his back in the downpour.

He found the puppy curled up beside the garbage bins behind the building, its matted fur trembling, one paw tucked awkwardly beneath it. The little thing looked like it had given up.

Lucas knelt beside it without hesitation, sheltering the shivering body with his own.

He didn’t think. He just acted.

By the time he carried it home, he was soaked and muddy, arms shaking with effort.

His mother took one look and sighed. “Honey… we can’t afford a dog.”

His dad shook his head. “It’s not a good time. We’re barely getting by as it is.”

Lucas nodded, not arguing. He just asked for an old towel.

That night, while the pup slept in a cardboard box in the laundry room, Lucas gave up half his dinner under the table.
