An Officer Rescued a Shivering Kitten — Then Learned the Shocking Truth About Who Left It (2 of 2)
James’s chest tightened. Without hesitation, he scooped the kitten into his hands. It was weightless, a ball of bones and fear. He tucked it against his chest, shielding it from the morning chill as he hurried back inside.
“Got a blanket?” he called out, his voice sharper than usual. Someone produced an old fleece jacket, another dug out a bottle from lost-and-found. A few minutes later, James sat at his desk, cradling the kitten in one hand, holding the bottle in the other. He tilted it gently toward the tiny mouth, and when the kitten latched on, sucking weakly at the rubber tip, his heart cracked wide open.
Who could abandon something so small?
He kept staring at the kitten as it drank, feeling both relief and rage. Relief that he’d found it in time. Rage that anyone could be so careless, so cruel. Then a thought struck him.
He looked up at the security team. “Pull up the cameras from last night,” he said.
Minutes later, they gathered around the glowing screen. Grainy footage flickered across it, showing the alley where the box had been dumped. At 2:14 a.m., a figure entered the frame. They bent down, placed the box against the wall, and walked away without a glance back.
When the face came into focus, James felt his stomach twist. It wasn’t a stranger at all. It was one of the station’s janitors—a man who’d worked in the building for nearly ten years. Someone who walked the same halls every day, exchanging hellos, fixing coffee machines, sweeping floors.
James’s jaw clenched. He couldn’t fathom it—how a man trusted to care for a workplace could so easily discard a life.
The room was silent. No one wanted to look away from the screen, but no one wanted to keep watching either. The betrayal stung deeper because it came from within.
James glanced down at the tiny creature curled in his hand. Its frail body stirred, nudging his palm with the smallest flicker of strength. Right then, he knew the kitten’s future was no longer in question. Whatever the janitor’s reasons, the little animal’s story didn’t end in a damp cardboard box. Not while James was there to protect it.
