For six years, my wife and I lived in a dim bedroom after our overhead fan light barely glowed. I replaced the bulb once and assumed the unit was broken when the new one was also dim. Since the fan itself was expensive and still worked perfectly, we made do with lamps, bathroom light, and even flashlights. Six years ago, the overhead fan light in our bedroom went dim — barely a glow.

I bought a replacement bulb, but when the new one was also dim, I figured the whole unit was busted.

The fan still worked perfectly, and since it was a pricey gift, I didn’t want to replace it.

Problem was, our bedroom gets very little natural light.

So for six years, my wife and I made do with bedside lamps, bathroom light, and sometimes even flashlights to clean or find things.

This winter, I finally decided I’d replace the fixture.

But first, I tried one last new bulb. Installed it, grabbed the remote, and… realized the light was set to “dim.”
