This Man Risked Everything to Rescue a Baby. The Mother’s Reaction? Shocking. (2 of 5)
A whimper.
Lucas slowed, scanning the rows of sun-scorched cars. One black SUV sat near the far end of the lot. He stepped closer.
The windows were so dark he could barely see inside—but something moved. Then he saw it. A baby. Red-faced, soaked in sweat, barely breathing. A child, locked inside with no air.
He pounded the glass. “Hey! Can you hear me?”
Nothing.
He tugged the door handles. Locked. The lot was empty. No parent in sight. The baby’s eyes rolled back.
No more thinking.
Lucas ran to a nearby planter and grabbed a rock. “I’m sorry, little guy,” he whispered, then smashed the window with a single blow. Shards rained down. He reached in, unbuckled the lifeless-feeling toddler, and bolted down the block toward the urgent care clinic.
By the time he burst through the doors, drenched in sweat and panic, the baby was barely responsive.
“He was locked in a car!” Lucas gasped. “He needs help—now!”
The nurses didn’t hesitate. One took the baby from his arms and disappeared into the back. Lucas slumped into a plastic chair, heart pounding, hands shaking. A receptionist offered him a tissue. “You did the right thing,” she said gently.
