It started like any other morning in Glacier National Park—mist clinging to the evergreens, a chill in the air, the slow rumble of wildlife waking up. But for Senior Ranger Lucas Meyers, a 29-year veteran of the service, what he witnessed that day would shake him to his core.

Around 6:45 AM, hikers reported a bear lingering by the riverbank just off Hidden Pine Trail. Not unusual—this time of year, mother bears are known to forage near the water with their cubs. But what stood out was how still she was.

“She was just sitting there,” Lucas recalled. “Not drinking. Not moving. Holding something in her arms.”
