10 Important Questions To Ask At Your Doctors’ Appointments (2 of 6)

“What vitamins and supplements might or might not be useful to me?”
Vitamins and nutritional supplements get a lot of hype, but in reality a lot of them are completely useless. In fact, some could even be dangerous. This isn’t to say none of them have health benefits, but it is important to discuss this with your doctor. For instance, if you live in a place that doesn’t get a lot of sun, you should ask if you should be taking a vitamin D supplement. Similarly, if you happen to be a vegetarian, taking a vitamin B12 supplement might be necessary.

“How many people with my condition have you treated?”
If your doctor diagnoses you with a new condition, one of your first questions should be to ask how much experience they have with treating it. If the answer is “not much,” you would want to see about getting referred to a specialist who routinely treats patients with this condition. Even if a doctor is a significant distance away, don’t use this as an excuse to not receive treatment from an expert. Your life could very well depend on this decision.
