Botox vs. Fillers: What is the True Difference and Which One is Right For You? (2 of 3)

How Do Dermal Fillers Differ?

Dermal fillers are different than Botox because rather than relaxing muscles, they restore volume. Most fillers are made of a substance called hyaluronic acid, which is naturally found in the body and can help skin retain its moisture and elasticity. By injecting fillers beneath the skin, the skin can be plumped in those key areas that have begun to thin. Skin can thin due to factors like age, so this method can be a way to restore a more youthful look.

Common uses of dermal fillers:

  • Adding more volume to cheeks
  • Give the lips an extra plump
  • Filling in lines around the nose to the mouth, called nasolabial folds
  • Smoothing out marionette lines, or lines from the mouth to the chin
  • Restoring more volume to the hands

Results from fillers can also vary, but typically last between 6-18 months. Unlike Botox treatment, fillers are great for static wrinkles, which are caused by loss of fat or collagen, or for facial hollowness.

What Should You Expect During Treatment?

Both procedures are great in that they are minimally invasive and can be performed in office. The treatment is usually preceded by a consultation, where the provider will assess your goals and determine if Botox, fillers, or a combination of the two will achieve your desired results.

During the session, you can usually expect:

  • Botox treatments only take a few minutes, with little discomfort
  • Filler injections can take between 15-45 minutes depending on the targeted areas

Mild swelling, bruising, and redness may occur for either treatment, but downtime is usually minimal. Most patients can return to their daily activities the same day as treatment.
